Dentures vs Implants: Which Is Right for You?
When teeth are missing, the two main roads are removable dentures or fixed implants — and patients often arrive convinced one of them is “obviously” better. The real answer depends on your mouth, your health, and your priorities. Here’s the comparison we walk patients through.
Chewing and comfort
Implants win on function: they’re fixed in bone, so you bite with force close to natural teeth — apples, corn, rotis without strategy. Dentures restore respectable chewing, but a full lower denture in particular rests on a moving foundation of gum and muscle; tougher foods take technique and patience.
Bone health — the quiet difference
This one matters more over the years. Jawbone stays strong because tooth roots stimulate it. Implants provide that stimulation; dentures don’t. Under a denture, the ridge of bone slowly shrinks — which is why dentures loosen over time and faces can look “collapsed” after many years. An implant is the only replacement that actively preserves bone.
Daily life and maintenance
Dentures come out at night and get cleaned separately; they’re simple but they’re an appliance. Implants are brushed and flossed like your own teeth — nothing to remove, nothing to soak, just regular cleaning visits like everyone else.
The cost logic
Dentures cost significantly less upfront — that’s real and it matters. The fuller picture: dentures typically need relining as the bone changes and remaking every 5–8 years, while a well-maintained implant is usually a one-time investment. Over 15–20 years, the gap narrows considerably. Neither choice is wrong; they’re different payment shapes for different budgets.
Who suits what
Dentures make sense when: many or all teeth are missing and budget is the deciding factor, when health conditions make surgery unwise, or when bone volume is very limited and grafting isn’t an option.
Implants make sense when: you want fixed teeth, your bone and general health allow it (most healthy adults qualify — there’s no age cutoff), and you’re ready for a longer one-time investment.
The middle path most people don’t know about
Implant-supported dentures. Two to four implants hold a removable denture firmly in place with press-stud-like attachments. It transforms the loose-lower-denture experience at a fraction of full-arch implant cost — and it’s often the sweet spot for long-time denture wearers who are tired of movement but don’t want a full implant bridge.
