How Long Do Dental Implants Last? An Honest Answer

The honest answer: with good placement and good care, a dental implant routinely lasts 15–25 years, and very often a lifetime. Long-term studies consistently show success rates above 90–95% at the 10-year mark. But averages hide the interesting part — what makes the difference between an implant that lasts five years and one that lasts fifty.

The implant vs. the crown

An implant has two parts with different lifespans:

  • The implant itself — the titanium post fused with your jawbone. This is the part that can last a lifetime. Once bone has grown onto it (osseointegration), it’s remarkably stable.
  • The crown on top — like any tooth crown, it experiences years of chewing. Crowns typically serve 10–15 years before wear or chipping calls for a replacement. Replacing a crown is straightforward and doesn’t disturb the implant below.

So “my implant needed work after 12 years” usually means a new crown — not a new implant.

What actually makes implants fail

Gum disease around the implant. The number one long-term threat. Plaque doesn’t care that the tooth is titanium — untreated, it inflames the gum and then the bone holding the implant (peri-implantitis). This is why implant patients need the same cleaning discipline as everyone else, arguably more.

Smoking. It impairs the blood supply the healing bone depends on, and doubles down on gum disease risk. Smokers’ implants fail measurably more often.

Uncontrolled diabetes. Well-controlled diabetes is compatible with implants; uncontrolled blood sugar impairs healing.

Poor planning. An implant placed without proper assessment of bone volume and bite forces struggles from day one. This part you can’t control after the fact — which is why choosing where you get the implant matters more than any aftercare tip.

What you control

The maintenance routine is unglamorous and effective: brush twice daily, clean between teeth, and keep six-monthly professional cleaning visits where we also check the gum around the implant. That’s it. No special gadgets required.

The bottom line

An implant is the closest dentistry gets to a permanent tooth replacement — and it’s a partnership. We plan and place it right; you keep it clean; it keeps working.
